Interstate 95's Finest Snowbird Resorts

Nov 19, 2023 By Juliana Daniel

Insignificant, with each city serving as the terminus of Interstate 95. Considering the vast distance I-95 travels and the stark contrasts between the quaint Maine village and the vibrant Florida city, starting with the weather, you can see how far I-95 goes.

Some parts of this 1,900-mile roadway may seem too familiar to you if you make the trip south every winter. If that's the case, consider taking a few detours to snowbird destinations the next time you return home after a warm Southern vacation.

Hold Off On Taking I-95 At The Moment

It's probably time to get back home from your warm snowbird retreat, but there's no need to hurry. Highway A1A in Florida begins at Key West and follows the coast almost to the state line with Georgia. Take as much as you like or as little as you like, and if driving on the highway makes you feel gloomy, try taking this beach route instead.

Act Like A Swamp Thing

If you want to break up your trip across Florida, you might always drive inland for a little. U.S. Route 27 passes through the Everglades before continuing north to Lake Okeechobee. It is possible to return to I-95 from Okeechobee through many state routes. If you're not in a rush, stop at the welcome sign for the little village of Yeehaw Junction on Highway 441.

Ground Control To Major Tom

To the delight of space nerds everywhere, Cape Canaveral, Florida, is located only a short drive east of Interstate 95. This snowbird stopover at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex has massive rocket boosters and the actual space shuttle Atlantis and is a great way to break up a drive north. Why not spend the night at Cape Canaveral while you're here?

Create New Memories In A Historic City

The tranquil Southern town of Savannah, Georgia, is a fantastic diversion for snowbirds because of its rich history and well-maintained architecture that precedes anything found in other Georgia cities. Green Truck Pub, a top-notch burger spot where you may have a vegetarian patty in place of the meat one, is also located there. A word to the wise: the jukebox at Green Truck is legit.

Make A Lengthy Detour Along The Shore

If you have the luxury of taking things slowly, consider taking Highway 17, which follows the coast of South and North Carolina, until connecting with I-95 again at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Explore the ancient villages of Washington and Edenton in North Carolina, get a biker tattoo at Myrtle Beach, or stop in Charleston, South Carolina and Wilmington, North Carolina. To each his own.

Take A Trip To The South Carolina Low Country

Make a stop in Beaufort, South Carolina, your snowbird destination, and take your time getting there. Beautiful antebellum houses are a hallmark of this picturesque community, which also served as a location for several sequences in the 1994 film Forrest Gump. Oh, and don't be such a clueless tourist: this South Carolina city is called "Byew-feet," whereas the Bow-fert in North Carolina is the correct one.

Experience The Flavor Of The South

Those who travel I-95 via eastern North Carolina may need to be made aware that they are whizzing through a veritable taste hub. Stop! To satisfy your taste senses, you must sample eastern North Carolina barbeque, a special combination of pulled pork and vinegar.

Wilson is home to two legendary barbecue joints, Parker's and Bill Ellis'. We'll give you a pass if Eastern North Carolina BBQ doesn't do it for you; we recognize that our readers have many different preferences.

Greetings From Asbury Park

You have returned to the land of four seasons if you have found yourself in New Jersey. If you still have a long distance, taking a little break from the highway is a good idea. Why not take a trip to Asbury Park, the seaside community immortalized by Bruce Springsteen, aka "The Boss?" If you are a snowbird, you should stop by the Stone Pony, a famed music venue where residents like Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi have performed on several occasions.

Stop Again Before Returning Home

If you're driving north through Rhode Island and have yet to arrive at your destination, stop for one more glimpse at the ocean. While Newport is famous for its elegant homes, it offers more budget-friendly options for tourists. Middletown is close by and has a variety of interesting attractions for those travelling through or planning a stopover. Moreover, Flo's Clam Shack serves very delicious seafood.
